MAIN OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

– identification of causes and a remedial plan related to the devastation of the natural environment/rising water table at the height of Kalemie/ – proposal for the revitalization of the “old” city, in particular improving communication and improving living conditions on the hills – analysis of basic needs in social, natural and economic categories and the possibilities of their implementation within the New Kalemie – indication of the appropriate city model, taking into account the socio-cultural and economic conditions of the current and future Kalemie IDENTIFICATION OF CAUSES AND A REMEDY PROGRAM RELATED TO THE DEVASTATION OF THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT As mentioned earlier, the city is struggling with a very serious problem resulting from the rising water table of Lake Tanganyika at the height of Kalemie. The water is destroying buildings, absorbing the areas at the mouth of the Lukuga River at a very high rate. The reason is the clogging of the river mouth with a huge amount of earth masses, flowing down from the devastated hills during the rainy season. Deprived of vegetation that allows for partial retention of rainwater and the destruction of the existing storm infrastructure, it creates another huge threat. The slow subsidence of the hills towards the lake carries the risk of landslides in areas very intensively built up with houses of very low quality of workmanship.
